Safety policy

Concussion protocol.

How we handle head injuries, following Washington youth-sports guidance.

Last updated · May 2026

Recognize

Coaches are trained to recognize the signs of a concussion, including headache, dizziness, confusion, nausea, balance problems, or sensitivity to light. Athletes are encouraged to speak up if they or a teammate feel unwell after contact or a fall.

Remove

Consistent with Washington's youth-sports concussion law, any athlete suspected of having a concussion is removed from the session immediately. When in doubt, we sit them out, no exceptions.

Refer

The athlete's parent or guardian is notified, and the athlete is referred to a licensed health-care provider for evaluation. The athlete may not return until cleared in writing.

Return to play

  • Written medical clearance is required before returning.
  • Return follows a gradual, step-by-step increase in activity.
  • If symptoms return at any step, the athlete drops back and rests before trying again.
