How to become a coach

Coaching, answered.

Everything you need to know before you apply. Still curious? Email nextwavehoops206@gmail.com.

What are the requirements to coach?

Solid basketball knowledge and the ability to teach it, reliability, and a genuine desire to help kids grow. Playing experience helps, but character and consistency matter most. All coaches complete our training and a skills assessment before working with athletes.

Do I need formal coaching experience?

No. Many of our coaches are experienced players who are new to coaching. We provide training on practice planning, safety, and personalized youth-coaching fundamentals so you're set up to succeed from your first session.

How much time does it take?

It's flexible. You set your own availability, and we match you with athletes who fit your schedule. Sessions are one hour, and you choose how many you take on per week.

Is coaching paid?

Next Wave Hoops is a volunteer-run nonprofit, so coaching is a volunteer role. You give kids the coaching you wish you'd had, and we handle scheduling, logistics, and support so you can focus on the basketball.

How does the application process work?

Four steps: a short online application, a skills assessment, coach training, then we match you with athletes. Most coaches go from applying to their first session in about three weeks.

Who will I be coaching?

Kids in grades K through 11, in one-on-one or small group sessions. We match you with athletes based on your experience and the age groups you're most comfortable with.

Can I coach abroad with the Taiwan branch?

Our Taiwan branch runs camps and clinics that give back to local communities. Opportunities to get involved internationally come up periodically, mention your interest in your application and we'll keep you posted.

How do I apply?

Fill out our coach application form. It takes about ten minutes and asks about your basketball background and availability. Use the "Apply to coach" button on this page to get started.
